Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in South-western Uganda celebrates another bundle of joy, born in Rushegura family within the Northern sector (Buhoma gorilla sector). According to a tweet by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the new baby gorilla was born on 11th November and during time of writing; both mother and child were in perfect health.
The mother of the new born baby known as Munyana is not a first time mother and was first sighted by trackers grooming her little one. Buhoma’s Rushegura is one of the habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Other four sectors that make up this Park are Ruhija (Eastern side), Nkuringo and Rushaga in the southern part of the Park. All the four sectors of Bwindi combined give a total of over 20 gorilla families but because of the fragility of their habitats and the vulnerability of these animals, only 8 persons are allowed to visit a habituated gorilla family per day for only one hour.
With a population of over 1000 individuals, Mountain gorillas are categorized as endangered species (according to IUCN Red List) living in the montane rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Due to the high demand for gorilla permits for the three counties where mountain gorillas are found, tourists are advised for book for the activity at least 4 months in advance to avoid disappointments.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is undeniably known for mountain gorilla trekking but tourists who visit the Park can also undertake other exciting activities that include mountain biking, hiking/nature walks, bird watching, butterfly watching, cultural tours, Gorilla Habituation Experience and many others. If mountain gorilla trekking and tranquility is your idea for a tourist destination, then Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is your number one destination and the increase in number of gorillas is another reason to discover its beauty.
